The Pilgrim's Progress

Written largely during his imprisonment in Bedford Gaol, this allegory follows Christian's journey from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City, passing through places that have entered common Christian language: Vanity Fair, the Slough of Despond, Doubting Castle.

Published in two parts (1678 and 1684), the work combines vivid narrative with deep Puritan theology on sin, grace, and perseverance, and remains, after the Bible, one of the most translated books in history.
